Cheers all!!!Matthew Kiesling shared thisLate last week, I was invited to present at the very first #NerdsLikeMe meetup group at Broken Tee Brewing in Highwood, IL. I helped lead the team through going from a simple idea to a fully deployed solution. Said in another way, we took a use case for fundraising outreach and showcased how you could use AI prompting (if doing once), AI bot building (if doing weekly or building for a small team) or full AI workflow (if automating that same idea for a whole department). The group was originally created from a post on Deerfield Dads (and surrounding burbs) Facebook group by Jonathan Shertok. It's expected to quickly expand beyond that. At this inaugural meeting, we had over 30 attendees that ranged in nerdiness, but I'll say that I've haven't been surrounded by so many data scientists, ML engineers and AI minded people in a long time! It was infectious and fun, from the presentations, to the deep questions and the 1:1 connections that we made afterwards. Excited to attend the next session and learn more! Also a shoutout to my dear friend Nim Sharon (one of the founders of this FB group) who helped me get connected. He's also a data nerd (like us)! Matthew Kiesling liked thisMatthew Kiesling liked thisTen years. That’s how long I stayed in my last role, and honestly, I thought I might never leave. But sometimes the universe has other plans. After a decade of building, learning, and growing in one place, I made the leap to join Guidehouse as a Director in their State and Local Government practice. And let me tell you—I’m absolutely energized by what lies ahead. What drew me in? Guidehouse’s entrepreneurial spirit and genuine focus on collaboration. As someone who loves to build things, the opportunity to help continue shaping their SLG practice feels like coming home. For the first time in my career, I’m at a company that’s as passionate about the state and local government space as I am. That alignment? It’s everything. But here’s what I really want to share: the sabbatical I took between roles might have been the best professional decision I’ve ever made. Seriously, sabbaticals should be mandatory. I took yoga classes (hello, flexibility I didn’t know I still had). I finally checked the Badlands off my bucket list—with three teenagers in tow, no less (South Dakota, you were worth the wait). I dove into professional development, refinished furniture until my hands were perpetually dusty, reconnected with friends I’d lost touch with, prioritized my mental health through therapy, and—perhaps most importantly—I just enjoyed the moment in ways I hadn’t in years. That time gave me clarity about who I want to be, both professionally and personally. It reminded me that building a career isn’t just about climbing ladders—it’s about finding places where you can create meaningful impact while staying true to yourself. So here’s to new chapters, to companies that feel like the right fit, and to taking the time we need to show up as our best selves. I cannot wait to see what we build together at Guidehouse.
